Year 12 students at The Skinners’ Kent Academy have been raising money for Breast Cancer Research. As part of their International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme, all students complete at least 25 hours of Community Service, which centres on helping local communities where a need is identified. The International Baccalaureate framework develops students’ values and moral compass, enabling them to work in and contribute to the global society in which we live.
This year, the Sixth Form students decided that they would take part in the Breast Cancer Research coffee morning. They designed and made a variety of different cakes, which were sold to staff and students to raise money for the charity. Two of the Sixth Form students designed gravity cakes and one was based on chocolates falling from a packet and the second showed popcorn cascading onto the cake below. These cakes were then auctioned and sold to the highest bidders. Over the course of two days the students raised £230, which will now be forwarded on to the charity.
The next event that the students will work towards is a Halloween Disco for Years 7 and 8 students at the Academy and they will be hoping to raise more than last year’s amount of £700. The money raised from the event this year will be used to fund the annual OAP Christmas party for around 40 local pensioners, as well as money also going towards other local charities like the Tunbridge Wells food bank.
