Each Term students in Years 7 and 8 complete a Conceptual Understanding project set by faculties, which is a Middle Years IB Approach for learning. During Term 1, students took part in 'The Great Fire of London' project set by Science, Technology and English. Their task was to investigate the causes and consequences of the fire, whilst presenting the findings in a number of different ways including diary entries, fact files, a storyboard and labelled models over the course of five weeks.
In Term 2, Newton House students as part of their project entitled 'A Question of Balance' had to create a 1:25 scale model like set designers do for a theatre performance. These models were to be based on a dance performance, hitting the requirement of 'balance' and the project was cross-curricular between Drama, Art, Music, Dance (PE) and Maths. The scale 1:25 was explained and taught through maths and students used their music knowledge to create a piece of music to accompany their dance stage design.
Linking with the IB MYP at the Academy, students are encouraged to be inquirers, creative and reflective in their approach to their projects. We look forward to seeing the next set of projects in Term 3!
