The Academy Library is at the heart of our facilities and strides to provide a safe, stimulating and purposeful learning environment for our students, in which they may work effectively, as individuals or part of a group, during the Academy day and outside hours.
Its role is to support teaching and learning, to help improve literacy standards, to foster a love of books and reading for pleasure, to develop information literacy skills and to support the personal needs and growth of the individual student.
The Library is staffed by one librarian who enjoys the help and support of 7 student librarians, from years 7 to 11.
We aim to provide a wide range of resources and equipment for all ages and abilities and currently stock approx. 10000 resources of both fiction and non-fiction. There are also 12 desktop computers available for student use.
Years 7 and 8 follow the Accelerated Reader scheme which has its base in the library. Reading and comprehension tests as well as book quizzes are offered to our youngest students to help them develop skills to make the right choices for their reading and to progress in a meaningful way.
The Book Club which runs all year round focuses on the South East Schools Themed Book Award during terms 1-4 and the Carnegie Medal Shadowing scheme in terms 5-6 and is open to students of all ages.
After hours an Independent Learning club run by one of our teaching assistants supports those who need a little extra help with their studies.
We are a friendly and welcoming space and look forward to seeing all our students.
