Virtual Open Event
We understand how important and daunting it can be to choose the right secondary school for your child. Unfortunately due to the current COVID-19 restrictions we are unable to hold our annual open evening, so to give you a taste of life at The Skinner's Kent Academy, we have put together the below videos.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What support do you put in with transition to secondary school?
We are very aware of the importance of building self-confidence to support a smooth transition from primary school to secondary school. On joining the Academy, students enter our Lower School of Years 7-8. There are Year Tutors and non teaching Heads of Year who play a vital role in the everyday life of students and this is one of the main links between the Academy and home.
Mr James Blake is the Senior staff member in charge of Lower School, he works closely with Miss Cattley our Head of Year 7 who play a key role in ensuring you are kept informed of your child’s progress and well-being
The Academy runs a Welcome Event for parents, a student Induction Day and a Summer School before students join in Year 7. There is also one day at the start of term in September where there are only Year 7 and Year 12 students in the Academy.
2. What is your OFSTED rating?
The Academy was rated as an Outstanding school in all categories as judged by Ofsted in its two-day inspection on the 8th and 9th June 2016.
3. What is the catchment area?
We are very pleased to be such a popular choice of secondary school in Tunbridge Wells. There is no official catchment cut off point as it will depend upon who is applying in each year and where they live, (distance is an admissions criteria – see website for full criteria). We encourage parents to select the Academy as their first choice, if they wish to apply for a place for their child, as this is the best chance of obtaining a place.
As you would expect the majority of students come from our local key feeder schools.
4. How do students travel to the Academy?
5. How do you support students to achieve their full academic potential?
Our students within the Academy have a full range of Academic ability and we are incredibly proud of the progress they all make. From Year 7 students are set by subject; this enables them to learn at the appropriate pace and level in each subject. Within this structure there are many opportunities for students to build confidence and it is easy for them to move sets as required. Our 7 year pathway culminates with students moving onto Universities, Apprenticeships and employment.
6. How do you support students with SEND?
We have an excellent support system and inclusive approach to education. Please see our SEND section of the Academy website for more information
