AI and Our Approach
AI and Our Approach at SKA and should be read in conjunction with our AI Policy (link to follow).
As an IB school, we embrace the IB philosophy that students should be active participants in their education. An IB education encourages students to be curious, think critically and challenge the status quo. As such, our approach to AI aims to build a safe environment that allows students, staff and governors to navigate, understand, and challenge the world of AI as it seeks to support their learning.
We want our students to think hard, as without thinking we are not learning. AI is there to support thinking and not replace.
The core themes below are central to our thoughts, approach, and use of AI. They ensure:
- we are open and transparent in our approach,
- we know where and when we can use it,
- we are fair and equal and check the response for bias, errors and misinformation
- we are robust in our approach to keep all staff and students safe,
- we are ensuring confidentiality by not sharing any personal or identifiable data
Transparency | Understanding | Equity | Robustness | Confidentiality |
AI is forever evolving, and we seek to be aware of the changing impact on the lives of young people, their learning and the future world of work. We will support our staff and students to understand how AI impacts their learning and work, and how to ensure they are using it ethically and safely. We will support parents and governors to know how it can support education and update our AI strategies, the educational impacts, and how we are ethically compliant.
At The Skinners’ Kent Academy, we will ensure the following key approaches are followed by all students and staff
- AI can be used to help understand a topic or theory or guide research; however, outputs must be referenced and cannot be used to complete any assessed work
- AI can be used to generate ideas or adapt tasks to meet our needs, for example adjusting reading levels of a text, creating an image to explain a concept; however, it must always be checked by a human for accuracy and appropriateness
- AI can be used to support our educational work and analysis of information; however, we will never share identifiable data
- AI can be used to support the assessment of student performance, however, cannot be the sole method of feedback and not without quality assurance by the human
- AI can be used to support in the planning and preparation of lessons or key curriculum documents; however, human quality assurance must take place
Many platforms require students to be aged 13 and above and as such, students under this age will not be able to access these AI applications within the Academy. Students will be able to access age-appropriate AI applications. These will be monitored as part of our current monitoring and filtering guidance.
As part of our teaching or assessment strategies, we may use AI to provide feedback and review student work. Any work uploaded will not have any personal / identifiable data
