Trip to British Wildlife Centre
Back
Our passionate Geographers and Higher Ability Year 8 had an information packed trip to the British Wildlife Centre on Tuesday this week. We got to see a range of animals, including ravens, owls, snakes, deer, frogs, badgers, rats, hedgehogs and so much more. Foxes and Otters were a big hit with the students and they loved the polecats too. We all learnt a great deal and the students couldn’t believe how big the otters are!
Facts of the day:
– Eagle Owls have a wing span of 6ft and can crush a fox skull
– Foxes only live on average 18 months in urban environments
– Antlers are covered in fur and deer eat their own antlers after they shed
– Weasels are the smallest mustelids, the size of a packet of polo
– Scottish wildcats cannot be trained or tamed, they are wild through and through.
– Hedgehogs could be extinct in under 20 years!
What an amazing job the staff here do; Claire was so knowledgeable and told us that she completed an Animal Science qualification at Plumpton College before coming to work at the British Wildlife Centre.
A great day all round and the sunshine made it even better!
