Sixth Form Trip to The National Theatre
Back
On Wednesday, our IB English Language and Literature students travelled to The National Theatre to see the classic Irish comedy ‘The Playboy of the Western World’. Starring in the production were Nicola Coughlan of Derry Girls and Bridgerton, and Siobhan McSweeny, well know for her role as the school Headmistress in Derry Girls.
The play centres on the arrival of a mystery stranger, Christy, in a small village in the remote west of Ireland. Announcing that he has killed his father, he becomes a local celebrity, fought over by a young barmaid (Coughlan) and a local widow (McSweeny), resulting in much confusion and comedy.
For most of our students this was their first visit to The National Theatre and for all of us, teachers included, of a play performed in a Hiberno-English dialect!
