Trip to Battlefields
Back
Last week we had our annual Year 9 trip to the First World War Battlefields, which was a moving experience for all. Our students were so well behaved and respectful throughout the visit.
We had one day in Ypres, visiting sites such as Hill 62, the Tyne Cot cemetery at Passchendaele, before finishing the day attending the evening Menin Gate ceremony. Two of our students laid a wreath at the ceremony on behalf of all the SKA community; a special mention to Beth and Marko who conducted themselves perfectly throughout.
During the second day, we visited sites in the Somme, including the Newfoundland memorial with the preserved battlefield and trenches. Several of our students were able to do some prior research into their family trees to find out more about their relatives’ involvement in the First World War. We also stayed in a comfortable hotel in Ypres and had the chance to visit a chocolate shop! Some students used their French knowledge in the gift shops too!
The History department would like to give a huge thank you to the Art department for supplying the wreaths and the DT department for making the memorial crosses.
