Year 7 Dragon’s Lair
Back
On Wednesday 6 December, the whole of Year 7 participated in our annual Dragon’s Lair competition. This year’s theme was ‘Creating and Branding a Chocolate Bar’ for which the young people had to carry out research on different chocolate bars; see if there is a gap in the market and a need for something new; work out what they would create, why that specific item, who it would be aimed at and what is their USP.
The event is aimed at highlighting not only careers within the confectionary industry but also for students to start exploring the transferable skills that they are beginning to develop which will be invaluable in their journey throughout SKA and into the future.
The morning began with a short talk from Grace at Goupie Chocolates, a family run business in Goudhurst and an introduction to the careers that can be had in a large confectionary organisation such as Nestle or Mars ranging from Nutrition Advisor to Sustainability Manager.
The students were split into groups of up to six who worked amazingly on creating and branding their chocolate bars. They then had to present in their tutor groups to each other and choose one to present in front of a panel of judges and the whole of Year 7. The six presentations were amazing with an array of different chocolates being presented. The judges had the difficult decision of who to choose as winners.
The winning bar was “Melties” based on the idea of turning a chocolate into a delicious hot drink. They received boxes of chocolates from Goupie Chocolate and an ice skating session. Prizes for 2nd and 3rd place were also presented.
We would like to thank the Dragon’s on the day, who kindly volunteered their time:
Grace Sullivan – Goupie Chocolate
Amanda Mays – Careers and Enterprise Company
Laura Ansell – Local Business owner
Simon Allford – Year 12 Business Mentor
Charlotte Steggles – The Education People
Well done Year 7 for amazing effort, teamwork and creativity.
Prizes were donated from Goupie Chocolate and the Tunbridge Wells Ice Skating Rink.
